What is Acupuncture and How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is the practice of balancing the “chi” or life force by inserting metallic needles through the skin. It is a type of ancient Traditional Chinese medicine, much like cupping therapy, and gua sha treatments, that has caught the curiosity and interest of Western medicine.

By restoring balance to the “chi,” acupuncture can help improve overall wellness, treat pain, and even manage stress. Among the many conditions that acupuncture can help relieve are headaches and migraines, muscle and joint pains, respiratory discomforts such as allergic rhinitis, and even menstrual cramps.

How Does It Work

The acupuncturist first determines if the complaint is all that needs to be addressed, or if it is a symptom of an underlying condition. Based on the findings, acupuncture will be administered on either a concentrated area or a combination of meridian points.

These meridian points are also known as pathways, where the “chi” flows through. There are 12 Primary Meridians, which then branch out to over 400 different points throughout the body.

An acupuncture procedure typically involves three steps:

Needle Application – Long, thin needles will be inserted at specific meridians in the body, at exact depths. The number of needles used depends on what needs to be treated. Applied correctly, there should be little to no discomfort during the process.

Needle Stimulation – The needles may be moved or twirled gently to facilitate the correction of the chi flow. Electrical stimulation may also be conducted by attaching nodes to the needles from a machine, which will generate mild electrical pulses.

Needle Removal – Treatment can last anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, so it is important to stay still and relaxed. Patients often report feeling relieved or energized afterward, although it must be noted that treatments may be conducted as a series rather than a one-time session.
