What to Know About Neck Pain and Treatment
Neck pain is a common problem, especially when we consider the number of people staring down at their phones all day. It can be either chronic or acute. Fortunately, our chiropractors can provide treatment for pain relief, healing, and help you prevent an injury in the future. At United Chiropractic Health Center, serving Ontario and the surrounding region, our chiropractors provide all-natural treatments for tech neck, car accident injuries, and other personal injuries.
The Causes of Neck Pain
Neck pain can happen for several reasons. It is a possible area for arthritis to develop, which is chronic. However, you could also suffer from neck pain due to tech neck, which occurs when you're looking down at your electronics or have your computer screen positioned too low. It temporarily stresses your neck.
You may also have neck pain caused by whiplash after a car accident, which tends to affect the soft tissue. Whiplash could affect your nerves as well. Sports-related injuries as well as other personal injuries may also cause damage to your neck.
Diagnosing Neck Pain
Our chiropractors will first ask you to fill out a detailed medical history. This gives us insight as to how long you have had neck pain as well as if you have any chronic ailments contributing to your pain. We will ask you a few questions about any recent injuries and want to know when you experience your symptoms. At this point of your exam, we will ask you to move your neck to assess your range of motion. We will press on your neck to evaluate it for any tender or swollen spots. Sometimes, imaging tests are also requested.
Treatment for Neck Pain
Your chiropractic care may include spinal alignment if you have a herniated disc in your neck or a misalignment. With this treatment, we manually move the vertebrae in your neck slightly so they realign with the discs. This eases pressure on the surrounding nerves and soft tissue.
Exercise therapy is often a treatment used and consists of the practitioner advising you on exercises you can do to alleviate your pain and discomfort. This treatment approach also allows you to gradually improve your range of motion and function. Hot and cold therapies are often recommended to ease your discomfort as you heal. We also offer lifestyle advice to lessen or prevent pain and injuries.
