Nerve Pain

The sciatic nerve is a major nerve that runs from the lower back and branches down into the hips, buttocks, and legs. When this nerve is compressed and causes a patient pain, this is called sciatica. There are many causes behind this condition. It can be caused when the patient has a herniated disc or a bone spur on the spine that affects this nerve. It can also be caused by a narrowing of the spine, known as spinal stenosis, that can compress the sciatic nerve. It can also be compressed by a tumor or by diabetes. Generally, the pain is felt on only one side of the body. It may be mild pain, moderately painful, or severe.

Signs You May Have Sciatica

If you have sciatica, it will be pain that is along the sciatic nerve. This can be in the lower back or anywhere from there down to the back side of the legs. There are different ways that this pain can manifest. It may be an ache at any point of the nerve, or it may be a burning pain. It can also be so bad that it's intolerable. Some patients feel it as a jolt of electricity. If you cough or sneeze, it can make the pain worse. If you sit for a long time, this can also aggravate the pain. You may get numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected side that is felt in the leg or foot.

Who Gets Sciatica?

There are many risk factors for developing this condition. When stress is put on the spine, this can cause sciatica to develop. Obesity and pregnancy can both cause this condition. It's common for herniated discs and spinal bone spurs to cause this pain, and these happen more often as we get older. Carrying heavy objects can often lead to sciatica as can spending many hours driving or sitting. It can also be caused by diabetes damaging the nerve.
